Litecoin Ordinals

GUIDE

Litecoin Ordinals

Attach images, text, or any file to individual units of Litecoin — creating native NFT-like assets on the Litecoin chain. Faster and cheaper than Bitcoin Ordinals thanks to Litecoin's block time and fee economics.

Litecoin Ordinals is an inscription protocol that lets you attach arbitrary data — images, text, audio, video — to individual satoshi-sized units of Litecoin (litoshis). Each inscribed unit is uniquely identifiable and transferable, making it effectively a native NFT on Litecoin. The protocol is a port of Bitcoin Ordinals adapted for Litecoin's transaction structure. Litecoin Ordinals inherits Bitcoin Ordinals' core mechanics but runs on Litecoin's faster block time (2.5 min vs 10 min) and lower fees (sub-cent vs multi-dollar during Bitcoin congestion).

How they work

The Ordinals protocol assigns each litoshi (the smallest indivisible unit of LTC — 1 LTC = 100,000,000 litoshis) a serial number based on the order it was mined. This ordinal numbering lets individual litoshis be uniquely tracked across transactions. An inscription attaches data to a specific litoshi by including the data inside a Litecoin transaction's witness field. Once inscribed, that litoshi carries the data everywhere it goes — transfers move the inscribed unit rather than copying the data. Wallets with Ordinals indexer support can display the inscribed content (e.g., render an inscribed PNG image) when showing your balance. Without indexer support, the litoshi looks like any other — the inscription exists but isn't visible.

Viewing Ordinals in Lite Wallet

Lite Wallet's Ordinals indexer scans your Litecoin addresses for inscribed litoshis and displays them in a dedicated 'Collectibles' tab alongside your main balance. You see each inscription's content (image preview for visual formats, text for text inscriptions), its inscription number (assigned globally in order of mining), and its current location. To send an Ordinal: tap it, tap Send, enter the recipient's Litecoin address. Lite Wallet constructs a transaction that specifically moves the inscribed litoshi without combining it with other UTXOs — this is critical, because combining would move the inscription to a different litoshi. Accidental merging of Ordinals with regular LTC UTXOs is the most common way people lose their inscriptions. Lite Wallet's coin control isolates Ordinal UTXOs by default.

Risks

Ordinals-specific risks beyond general token market risk: indexer dependency (your wallet needs an indexer to 'know' which litoshi is inscribed — if the indexer misreports, you may send or receive unexpectedly), accidental UTXO merging (sending an inscribed litoshi as part of a regular LTC send can detach the inscription — Lite Wallet guards against this but other wallets may not), ecosystem immaturity (marketplace liquidity is smaller than Bitcoin Ordinals, so bid/ask spreads can be wide). If you hold valuable Ordinals, use a wallet with proper Ordinals handling and understand which specific litoshi carries the inscription.

Ordinals FAQ

The underlying litoshi is still worth 1 litoshi's worth of LTC. The inscription creates a collectible layer on top — the combined inscribed-litoshi trades based on the inscription's perceived value plus the litoshi base. Valuable inscriptions can trade for orders of magnitude more than their satoshi content.
